INTRODUCTION:

The cartoon below has been reprinted here with the kind permission of the cartoonist and copyright owner, Kevin KAL Kallaugher whose work may be viewed at www.kaltoons.com

If a picture is worth a thousand words, then a good cartoon speaks volumes. The cartoon characterises the undemocratic idiocy of the Bush Administration and in so doing characterises the obsequious Howard Administration vis-à-vis the Iraq War 2003.

Never the less, for those of us less talented, the following written words will have to suffice.

On the 1st May 2003, CBS News reported GWB’sMission Accomplished”, declaration. Two weeks later, the Federal Parliamentary Hansard quoted Prime Minister John Howard’s response. The excerpt, which complements the cartoon above quite nicely, can be found at the following address. Refer to page 14418.

The entire Ministerial Statement (dated 14th May 2003) is worth reading but some choice selections follow, viz.

Ministerial Statements: Iraq: Mr Howard: "The House will recall that on 18 March this year it resolved to support the government’s decisions to commit Australian Defence Force personnel to the international coalition to disarm Iraq. The coalition undertook to enforce Iraq’s compliance with its obligations under successive resolutions of the United Nations Security Council, with a view to restoring stability and security to that area of the Middle East…….”

“….. I again take the opportunity of reaffirming the correctness of the government’s assessment in pre-deploying our forces, and I record the bitter opposition of the Australian Labor Party when that decision was taken.”

“Not only was the military operation completed quickly and successfully but it is also worth recording that all of the doomsday predictions, particularly the many that came from those who sit opposite, were not realised. The oilwells were not set on fire; there were not millions of refugees; the dams on the Tigris and Euphrates rivers were not breached to bring on catastrophic flooding; and there was no long, drawn out, bloody, Stalingrad style street-to-street fighting in Baghdad. For all of this we must be immensely grateful, but it is a reminder of the hysteria and the doomsday predictions that often accompany operations of this kind. And, just as many of the predictions about a Western Front style holocaust that were made in 1991 when the land war commenced were proved wrong, so the predictions on this occasion have been proved wrong.”

“The decisive victory of the American led coalition reflects enormous credit on the strength and the determination of the leadership of President Bush. Again I remind the House of the way in which his role was vilified and traduced by many of those who sit opposite and of the way in which speaker after speaker from the Australian Labor Party impugned his integrity, assaulted his judgment and called into question his ability to lead the United States in this very difficult conflict. History has proved them wrong. The performance of the President has illustrated how infantile their protests were, and the leadership that he has given on this occasion, I believe, will bring about a permanent change in attitudes in the Middle East."

On 27 June 2003, the following message in red type, came from PM Howard's office in response to my emailed questions to Mr Howard, as to whether or not he would consider instituting referenda processes to make Australia more democratic:-

"Dear Mr Bailey

Thank you for your email of
5 June 2003.

In response to your questions - No: the existing constitutional arrangements
have served
Australia well in peace and war since Federation.

Yours sincerely

Tony Nutt
Principal Private Secretary"

The reality of the disastrous 2003 Iraq War in 2008 and the consequential amplification of terrorism prospects on US Allies and Israel in particular - repudiates John Howard's supposed judgement that he always knew best, "What’s in Australia's best interests", without the need for any specific reference to the Australian people. Clearly, he did not know. Public comprehension of that reality easily accounted for John Howard's pre-election polling problems. Mr Howard was in denial pre-election. He remains so post-election, despite his having lost the election disastrously.

Extract from a privately distributed RUGC edition dated 26 July 2007, (prior to the election that the Howard Government lost), viz:-

If John Howard & Co seriously believe that the Vietnam War and the Iraq War 2003 have served Australia well, then they are seriously deluded war mongers and continue the tradition of being corrupt lackeys of successive US Administrations. Australian media demonstrate that they are not willing or able to seriously campaign for democratic change to the persistently undemocratic political status quo. If Australian media cannot bring themselves to campaign for binding referenda processes to be written into the Australian Constitution to resolve (a) whether or not Australia should be committed to any mooted war and (b) mandate uncertainty on major controversial issues, then clear evidence of extreme right wing bias, ubiquitous brainwashing by omission in particular and the tyranny of editorial corruption prevails today. It is time that the people of Australia rebelled en masse against mutually self-serving bipartisan declarations of support for "The right of government to govern", regardless of whether or not a mandate exists. Mr Rudd OL has been tarred with the same brush. What better time for mass protests than in the lead up to the Federal Election?

Please feel free to distribute this email and attachments freely to all and sundry interested parties. Happy Birthday John.

Cheers:

Jim Bailey

“IF YOU CHANGE THE GOVERNMENT,

THEN YOU CHANGE THE COUNTRY”? WOULD THAT

BE TRUE OR FALSE - BOTH OR NEITHER, IF QUALIFIED?

IF TRUE THEN THE DIFFERENCES WOULD HAVE TO BE AMPLIFIED BY POLLIE SPUN PRETENCES, TO HAVING MAJOR DIFFERENCES!

IF FALSE, THEN BOTH MAJOR PARTIES SUBSCRIBE TO UNDEMOCRATIC GOVERNANCE BETWEEN ELECTIONS IN

THE NAME OF BIPARTISAN SUPPORT FOR “THE RIGHT OF GOVERNMENTS TO GOVERN” UNDEMOCRATICALLY.

AND SO,

ACROSS THE OZ POLITICAL AEONS, NOTHING MUCH HAS CHANGED, AS THOUGH MOST VIRTUOUS, REGARDLESS OF

WHICH PARTY HAS HELD POWER? CORRECT? YEP.

AND SO,

THE RUDD GOVERNMENT HAS AN HISTORICAL

OPPORTUNITY TO ACTUALLY CHANGE THAT PERCEPTION,

WITH ACTUAL DEMOCRATIC CHANGE, OR TO RENEGE ON THE PROMISE OF “NEW LEADERSHIP” (WHICH IS AKIN TO THE COMMONWEALTH BANK PROMISING TO BE “DETERMINED TO BE DIFFERENT”). THUS, THE RUDD GOVERNMENT ACQUIESCES

TO MORE OF THE SAME UNDEMOCRATIC GOVERNMENT,

DERIVED FROM INTERESTS VESTED IN TYRANNY.

AND SO,

POLLIES OF BOTH MAJOR PARTIES RAGE AWAY ABOUT EACH OTHER’S INCOMPETENCE. SADLY, BOTH PERSIST WITH BEING CORRECT. BOTH REFUSE TO OFFER AUSTRALIA THE OBVIOUS

FIX FOR GROTESQUE POLITICAL & ECONOMIC INEFFICIENCIES DERIVED FROM PERSISTENT UNDEMOCRATIC GOVERNMENT. THE ONLY FIX WOULD BE TO GIVE THE PEOPLE SPECIFIC VOTES FIRST & FOREMOST (a) ON EVERY MOOTED WAR, & (b) ON MAJOR CONTROVERSIAL LEGISLATION. SO WHERE ARE

THE POLLIES WHO SUPPOSEDLY

RESPECT THE WILL OF THE PEOPLE?

HE! HE! HE! HO! HO! HO! HA! HA! HA!

WE WOULD BE JOKES, IF NOT

FOR THE GIGANTIC HOAX

BEING PERPETRATED?
